AE are specialists within the specialized industry of athletic performance. We believe that our strength & conditioning methods will not only increase an individual’s function/performance, but also increase one’s health, fitness, and well being. Our goal is to optimally prepare individuals through scientifically based training.

The exercise science applied in our strength & conditioning services allows an individual to become healthy, functional, muscular, strong, and conditioned. Exercise Science is the study of human movement and the related biological responses. Movement becomes a science through precise study, analysis, and documentation of exercise and sport type activities. It involves biomechanics, kinesiology, physiology, and health and constructs usable principles from this science into training.Like-wise our periodized exercise programs involve multiple exercise science principles; listed below are a few but important scientific principles applied within AE training programs. (In no particular order)

AE Principles on Exercise Science:

Periodization

A pre-planned training plan, which consists of short or long-term cycles (days vs. weeks vs. months), with changes in the workout at regular intervals. By manipulating your training variables, such as variations in exercises, reps, sets, and weight load intensities you will maximize your progress and motivation, and help to prevent plateaus, injuries, and over-training.

Central Nervous System

Is made up of the brain, spinal cord, nerve pathways, and sensors to the muscles and organs. The impulse or signal to the muscles from the spinal cord is called neural drive, involving motor or efferent neurons, nerve fibers, motor units, motoneurons, and muscle fibers. The central nervous system response is extremely fast and gets better with repeated efforts but happens instantly, e.g., picking up a pencil vs. picking up a 50 lb dumbbell. The CNS instantly determines if the task can be completed, what muscles to recruit, and how to perform the task. It knows the difference between the weight of the pencil and the 50lb dumbbell even with your eyes closed by touch and feel. Things that interrupt and obstruct CNS neural drive are poor posture, improper form, inflexibility, strength imbalances, nerve injury, and scar tissue.

Technique & Posture

Proper form and posture are necessary for correct muscle recruitment and optimal strength/performance gains. If a movement cannot be performed with the correct technique, form, and posture it should be stopped. An assessment should be made to determine the reason, so that the necessary corrections can be made. Remember correct technique and posture will optimize neural drive to the correct muscles and will prevent faulty muscle recruitment patterns and injury. e.g., excessive forward lean vs. upright torso in the squat, places undue stress on the knees and lower back regions.

Bio Mechanical Analysis

Sport Biomechanical Technique is best to correct after proficient levels of balance, flexibility, speed, power, and strength are attained. These areas will allow the athlete to correct, improve, and implement the correct biomechanics and technique of his/her particular sport.  AE offers a comprehensive instructional video analysis of athletic movement in:

— Structural & Strength
— Sprint Bio-Mechanics
— Olympic Weightlifting
— Posture & Stability
— Muscle Fiber Testing (Fast, Mix, Slow)

There are several components that enhance performance: speed, strength, power, flexibility, muscle imbalance or balance, neuro-muscle recruitment, biomechanics, technique, and body composition to name a few of the primary ones.

You can improve an individual’s performance simply by improving their conditioning levels. However, individuals find this to be a short-term solution that doesn’t maximize nor optimize their athletic potential. Any time an individual out of shape (or deconditioned) gets into better shape (or conditioned) they can experience rapid improvement in their overall performance but quickly realize it ends there.

In order to continue improvement he/she will need to address, in a planned and proper progression, all the factors that contribute to optimal performance.

Professional Q&A

What’s the professional performance service, and who uses this?

Our elite strength and conditioning programs are designed for professional, national, Olympic caliber athletes. We strategize a complete plan for an athlete to improve health, longevity, and performance. In order to manage expectations and results we offer a conditional contract of service to our elite athlete(s) that wish to receive physical training, weight management, and/or rehabilitation services within our facility or outside.

What type of cost can be expected for elite services?

We often find the answer to this question begins with a serious discussion about the commitment level of the potential client. Bluntly put, we ask the client to put a value on their performance, and we advise them if they’re not committed to investing towards their performance at a high level then we are not in a position to help. A single session and/or consultation for a professional athlete is $250.00. If a professional athlete chooses to commit for services over a course of time, in order to best manage expectations, and for both parties to mutually benefit, AE structures individual contracts for all professional performance services.

What type of professional athletes have you trained?

We have trained a variety of athletes over the last thirty plus years. The professional athletes that seek our services have aspirations to continue growth and development in their physical training at a high/professional level. These individuals understand their investment will help towards maintaining and continuance of their career. We have worked with national caliber athletes in track and field, weightlifting, swimming, squash, to nontraditional activities such as martial arts and body building. In addition, we continue to work with professional athletes in football, basketball, and baseball. Our staff is certified and advanced degrees in the science of human structure, movement, exercise and physical training. Applicable references furnished upon specific conditions.

Corporate Q&A

What type of cost is expected for an adult or amateur athlete participating in strength and conditioning services?

This frequently asked question depends on several factors to accurately answer. An individual session or consultation on physical training for an individual / amateur athlete will cost $125; economical group training and discounted session packages are available for purchase upon request.

I’m interested in working with an experienced trainer to improve my overall fitness and health. Do you work with individuals that aren’t athletes and/or don’t compete?

YES, our services are available for non-competitive athletes as well. The professional staff at AE has the ability, education, and experience to work with serious individuals simply seeking a higher level of health and fitness. Our facility has a private setting that is equipped to handle personal goals at the beginner, intermediate, and advance stages of physical training. We have encountered all types of recreational athletes and non-athletes at the facility. We simply tell individuals, that if they desire to improve their performance than they’ve come to the right place.

What service(s) do you offer an adult that participates in a club/league for a given sport and competes on the weekends regularly?

For active adults and/or amateur athletes serious about improving their athleticism for competitive and non- competitive activities we offer a wide range of services such as; individual training, group training, weight management, in season training, and post rehabilitation. Please note; available days and times may change seasonal. Individuals are required to complete an assessment prior to regular participation.

Student Q&A

What’s the difference between your service and other trainers (or programs) that work with young athletes?

AE is committed to delivering the most up to date research and cutting edge trends on physical training. The majority of our clients are mature athletes with a professional or amateur status. Working with either population requires you to have extensive knowledge and skill on how to effectively improve performance as well as address other technical issues. It’s not our goal to train a whole team or a large volume of student athletes in a generic manner, we seek those who wish to excel through scientific, technical, and quality driven training. Student athletes that participate at AE benefit by working with a staff that has the knowledge to teach, and the applicable experience to help an individual achieve optimal performance. Please note the recommended age for a scholastic athlete interested in group training is at least 14 years of age. Special circumstances will be handled case by case.

What type of results can I expect to see once I begin training with AE?

Once we have a clear understanding of your purpose and needs which would include information such as your availability, frequency, maturity, hormonal state, athletic ability, genetics, injury history, muscle-skeletal integrity, training experience, and current strength and conditioning levels, that gives us a better idea on the training duration, protocol, and results. Based on our current data and experience, aspiring (student) athletes should spend a minimum of eight weeks and as much as sixteen weeks of training prior to a competitive season. Athletes that require rehabilitation will need additional time to adequately get ready. Over an eight week period, training three days a week, the average student athlete will increase his/her strength by 15% and speed by .26 tenths/jumps 1”.

What type of cost is expected for a student athlete participating at Athletic Excellence?

This frequently asked question depends on several factors to accurately answer. For student athletes serious about improving their athleticism we offer individual and/or group training. Group training allows an aspiring athlete to receive an individualized strength and conditioning program and quality instruction economically. Private instruction (or one-to-one) is also available for athletes that will benefit the most under those circumstances.

Group training for the student athletes is offered and discounted session packages are also available for this service. Individual training for an amateur / student athletes cost around $125.

Who and what type of student athlete(s) have trained at your facility? Do you have any references from those student athletes to share?

We have trained a variety of athletes over the last thirty plus years, which also includes student athletes. The majority of the student athletes that seek our services have aspirations to continue to compete in college and/or currently participate in a collegiate sport with aspiration to play after college. In addition, we have worked with young adults that do not compete in a sport but wish to improve their overall health and fitness. We have numerous personal references, statistics, and data on student athletes we have worked with over the years. Some have gone on to a professional level and continue to train with us periodically. Check our Meet our Clients section for stories on our student athletes or feel free to contact us.
